Spring Tides on Monday. I would have thought there must be a good
chance of coastal flooding at the top of the Bristol Channel if the
predictions prove correct. Force 9-11 over the sea of the north coast
of SW England blowing the water straight up the Bristol Channel & a
pressure of 970mb to help the level rise further. The swell swell
forecast is also impressive http://magicseaweed.com/UK-Ireland-MSW-Surf-Charts/1/
, which might test the Bude sea defences.

Its not just the depth but the breadth of coverage of fairly low pressure
that ends up feeding that dome of sea water into the north North sea.
This coming one is broad. The spring tide on Monday is in the top 15 percent
of all high water heights predicted for this year, before adding the surge
and any local low track and wind effects.
For central south coast the midnight tide mon/tue will be interesting

Actually, it's one of the 5 highest tides of the year at Newquay,
putting it in the top 1% of tides this year. You have to wait until
October for a tide as high as Monday morning's to occur again.

Bad timing I'd say.

For Portsmouth there are 105 predicted tides of 4.7m or higher in 2008,
Monday is predicted as 4.7m.
About 710 tides in the year, so I make it about 15 percent.
I can't believe that Newquay is that much different in that aspect of the
tides.
I will run Xtide32 for Newquay tomorrow and see what emerges

I was confusing Portsmouth and Southampton data, 4.7m predicted for Soton,
Monday for Monday.

For Pompey it is 4.8m predicted , 56 tides of 4.8m or more so about top 8
per cent

I've doubled checked with another set of tidetables, which makes it
the 3rd highest of the year, Newlyn virtually the same. I've also
checked easytide online, which gives 7.3m for Newquay Monday. The
highest for the year is normally about 7.4.

Best believe it!

Southampton is a a very abnormal position.

It's not that abnormal tides-wise, apart from the extended high tide
followed by a rapid drop to low water. I live near the mouth of
Southampton Water and at Calshot (on the opposite side from me) high
tide is predicted as 4.8m - one of only 3 in the year (the other two
are in April) so that's in the top half of one percent for the year.

Low tide is predicted as 0.4m and that's one of only 5 in the year
(the other 4 are in April) so that's under the 1% too.

I'm interested in exploring rarely exposed sand and shingle banks at
such times, especially when pressure is high (pity about the
developing low!) but I'm there at high tide too, often trying to
resist getting blown over.

We're only quibling over inches really. The Monday midday tide at Portsmouth
predicted at 4.9m, 18 of these or more this year so top 2.5 percent.

I wonder what the 14.15, 6.4m, no higher this year, Thames Estuary tide will
be like.
Anyone know of a webcam covering the Thames barrage?

5.5m above mean sea level at Woolwich is the design breach level.
Mean sea level at Woolwich about 3.2m.

So about 2.3m above predicted for Monday is the over-top level
Has any of the gates ever failed, eg pushbike jammed between fixed and
moving parts ?

Same here! Pednvounder is a small nudist beach just round from
Porthcurno, quite difficult access. But at low water on a big Spring
huge areas of flat sand are exposed and you can easily walk around
from Porthcurno.

The water in the pools that are left can get really warm.
