Default Today's model interpretation (10/03/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon on Friday.
Issued 0528, 10th March 2008

The weekend will see high pressure slowly moving in from the west, with rain
or showers likely on Saturday and the first part of Sunday.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS

A very deep low lies to the immediate west of the UK, with strong to gale /
severe gale force southerlies over much of the UK. Tomorrow the main centre
of the low is over the North Sea, with a secondary centre over Scotland.
Strong WNW'lies are the result. On Wednesday another deep low moves
eastwards, this time over Scotland. Winds ate strong to gale WSW'lies,
followed by strong WSW'lies on Thursday as low pressure fills to the north.

The jetstream chart shows a marked shortwave pattern over the North
Atlantic, with a much weaker flow than recently. The UK lies under a trough
and the same is true at the 500hPa level. MetO also has the UK under a
trough, with an upper low to the north. ECM has a westerly flow aloft with
lows to the north and NE, while GEM also brings upper westerlies.
At the surface GFS brings low pressure over the North Sea with SW'lies for
SE England. Scotland sees NNE'lies and elsewhere winds are NW'lies or
northerlies. MetO has a slack low over the UK with light winds for all areas
except Northern Ireland, which lies under NW'lies. ECM shows a col over the
UK, while GEM has a secondary low over the Irish Sea, with SW'lies and
SE'lies for England and Wales, northerlies for Northern Ireland and a col
for Scotland.

Evolution to T+168
ECM brings a ridge to the west on day 6, resulting in NW'lies for all. The
NW'lies persist on day 7 as the ridge builds.
A ridge moves in from the west on day 6 with GFS, leading to NW'lies. The
winds become SW'lies on day 7 as the ridge moves ESE'wards.

Looking further afield
Northerlies cover the UK on day 8 with ECM, with high pressure over Northern
Ireland and Scotland. Day 9 sees high pressure east of Scotland, with
easterlies for much of the UK. By day 10 a ridge covers the UK, with light
winds for most.
Day 8 with GFS shows a col over the UK, followed by NE'lies and ENE'lies on
day 9 as low pressure moves SE'wards over Biscay. The winds become stronger
northerlies and NE'lies on day 10 as high pressure builds to the west.

Ensemble analysis
(http://91.121.94.83/modeles/gens/gra...ille=Lon dres)
The ensembles continue to show a typical mobile "sine wave" for the next
week, followed by a lengthy cool spell.
