Default Today's model interpretation (11/03/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon on Saturday.
Issued 0526, 11th March 2008

The weekend will end on an unsettled and cool note, with low pressure close
to the UK and all areas seeing rain. Into next week it looks as though the
unsettled and cool theme will continue for at least a couple of days.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS

An elongated low lies over the North Sea and NE Scotland, with strong
WNW'lies and westerlies over the UK. Tomorrow a secondary low deepens over
Scotland, bringing strong ot gale force WSW'lies over the UK. Strong
westerlies persist on Thursday as the low moves swiftly ENE'wards, followed
by WSW'lies on Friday as a weak ridge moves eastwards.

The jetstream chart shows a weak and disorganised flow over our part of the
world, with a weak trough over the UK and a weak (and split) flow over the
North Atlantic. At the 500hPa level there's also a weak trough over the UK,
with a ridge to the west. MetO has a weak upper low over the UK, while ECM
brings a trough to the west and upper SSW'lies over the UK. GEM shows upper
SW'lies in association with a trough to the north.
At the surface GFS brings a low over the southern North Sea with moderate to
strong NNW'lies and NW'lies as a result. MetO has a shallow low over
Ireland, leading to southerlies for England and Wales and ENE'lies
elsewhere. ECM shows a trough over England and Wales, with northerlies
across Scotland and Northern Ireland. GEM brings a low over the North Sea, a
trough over England and NW'lies for most as a result.

Evolution to T+168
ECM brings strong northerlies on day 6 due to a deep low over the southern
North Sea. The winds become NE'lies on day 7 as the low fills and moves only
slowly eastwards.
Lows lie to the NE and SW on day 6 with GFS. This leads to strong NW'lies
over Scotland and lighter westerlies or WNW'lies over northern and eastern
England. Elsewhere winds are light. On day 7 a trough lies to the east and
NNW'lies cover the UK.

Looking further afield
A ridge covers the UK with day 8 of ECM, leading to NNE'lies for England and
Wales with WNW'lies elsewhere. WNW'lies affect all areas on day 9 as the
ridge moves SE'wards, followed by NNW'lies on day 10 with low pressure to
the east.
Day 8 with GFS shows NNW'lies for all with low pressure to the east and a
large high over the mid-Atlantic. A weak ridge moves over the UK on day 9,
leading to NNW'lies for England and Wales with SW'lies elsewhere. Day 10
sees WSW'lies and westerlies, with a deep low to the north.

Ensemble analysis
(http://91.121.94.83/modeles/gens/gra...ille=Lon dres)
The ensembles continue to show a typical mobile "sine wave" for the next
week, followed by a cool spell.
