Default The first thundery sky

A real thunder type summer sky seen today in Surrey and Sussex with
altocumulus almost of the castellanus variety and a sultry feel to the early
afternoon. In summer it would have been a hot day breaking down to
widespread storms. I wish I had kept a record of such days over the years to
see any pattern to the first date of a thundery sky observed. Must have a
more detailed look at my records.

It certainly looked like that, and later there was a lot of
rather threatening-looking middle level stuff. But there was no drama
to follow, just moderate rain at worst with a temperature of about
9°C. Oh, well, a nice summer while it lasted.

Similar situation here in France yesterday. The morning was warm and
humid (temp reached 20), and thundery looking, with a light north-
easterly breeze. The pressure fell from 1011 mb at 07:00 to 1003.7 at
15:30. From around 16:00 the wind veered into the south west and
increased, gusting to 35 mph, heavy rain started, there were a couple
of flashes of lightning and the pressure shot up to 1012 mb by 20:00.
Typical cold front progression around these parts. First thunder of
the year! (the last recorded thunder event was in September last
year).
