Default Extreme rainfall event Raunds, East Northants. 60.1mm

Rainfall recorded 24 hours to 0900z 16-03-2008 60.1mm.
Recorded in a std 5" gauge, my check gauge, other end of garden
and less exposed recorded 59.8mm so confident in my recordings.
This was my wettest day (09-09z) since 78.4mm on 09-08-2004.
The standing water in Raunds this morning at 0830z was as deep
as 1.2 metres at the bottom of the town, near the small tributary
of the river Nene that runs through the south, and lowest point (52m))
in Raunds. I understood that more than 10% of your average annual
rain in 24 hours constituted an extreme rainfall event.
Please correct me if I have misunderstood this.

Ian,

Raunds, East Northants. 63m amsl. NGR SP9972

.... if you are thinking of the old 'British Rainfall' definitions, I
believe the value is at least 15% of the annual average, which is then
classed as an 'exceptional fall'. Not to be confused with the 'Very
Rare', 'Remarkable' & 'Noteworthy' classification used for
short-period/high intensity rainfall.

Martin,

Thanks for putting me right, I was thinking of the older
British Rainfall definitions. Still, 10.1% of average yearly
rainfall, and 2nd wettest day since I have been keeping records
in Raunds got me excited )
