uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

Default Glaciers suffer record shrinkage

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/7299561.stm

Experts have called for "immediate action" to reverse the trend, which
is seen as a key climate change indicator.

If it was to happen it's all to little to late.

Dear Sir
It is too and too, not to and to.

However ,during my geology Phd in 1975, we were measuring the very same
glaciers ,and found the terminal moranic positions exceptionally varied over
5000yrs, Infact glacial terminal positions had receeded 8 times to a more
receeded position than at present.(no human co2 then.)

Experts have called for ***"immediate action" to reverse the trend****,

How can humanity stop glaciers from melting? Perhaps build a giant dam
at the end of the glacier, and blow very cold air onto it !

which
is seen as a key climate change indicator.

And then use the glaciers to cool the atmosphere that's been heated up
by the CO2 that's been emitted by the generators that produced the
cool air that cooled the glaciers ...........

No, there are lots more alternatives:

1. Put a giant venetian blind in space to block off a small
percentage of the sun's output - 1% should do it - bags I holding onto
the chord, though!
2. Temporarily slow down the earth's orbit during the night(!) to
make the cooling nights longer and the hot days shorter,
3. Move the earth into a higher orbit (some politicians and pundits
are already there), further away from the sun - give me a decent sized
lever and I'd be happy to give it a go.
4. Twice a year, at the equinox, park the earth for a few days to
allow both hemispheres a bit of a chance to take a breather and cool
down
5. Syphon some of the oceans off onto the moon,
6. If that's too ambitious, maybe drill a large plughole through the
Pacific into the eath's core and drain off some of the water that
way,
7. Make smoking compulsory for everyone so that the increased opacity
of the atmosphere will reflect more of the sun's heat (or does that
absorb it?)
8. Encourage everyone to drink more fizzy drinks, using atmospheric
CO2 during manufacture
9. Grow larger bones
10. Construct huge Limewater fountains to absorb excess atmospheric
CO2
11. Take one less breath in every 20
12. Metabolise less by sleeping 50% more
13. Move more slowly, speak less often, do less work
- and stop politicians and career "environmentalists" producing so
much hot air, in favour of actually doing something constructive.

Regards,

- Tom.

I'm not clear how you could have studied a terminal morraine in a more
receeded position than at present, as by it's very definition, it
would currently be under rather a large chunk of ice. Even if it
hadn't been damaged by the subsequent spread of the glacier, and you
were able to identify it under the ice, I'd still be interest to know
how you dated the deposit.

As glaciers are systems which do not all move in synch (some, after
all are currently expanding) it is the general trend which is more
important than the movement of any particular glacier in any case. You
can always find a glacier which is bucking the trend.

(Hope my English is OK)

Graham (I've also studied terminal morraines)
