Default Today's model interpretation (22/03/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon on Wednesday.
Issued 0545, 22nd March 2008

The latter half of the working week will see cool and unsettled conditions
across the UK, with a col on Thursday giving way to an Atlantic low for
Friday and the weekend. Snow is likely over the hills of Scotland, but for
most it'll be cold rain.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS

Low pressure covers Germany, while high pressure extends from SW of Iceland
to north of the Azores. Strong to gale force northerlies and NNW'lies cover
the UK. Tomorrow a trough moves southwards over the UK, with NW'lies in
advance and NNW'lies following behind. There are further NW'lies on Monday
as low pressure deepens to the east. The low deepens further on Tuesday,
with further NW'lies over the UK.

The jetstream chart shows a shortwave pattern over the North Atlantic, with
a ridge to the west and a trough over the UK. At the 500hPa level there's a
trough over eastern areas, with upper NW'lies elsewhere. MetO brings upper
NW'lies for all with a trough to the east, while ECM has a weak ridge over
England and Wales with a trough over Ireland. GEM has a weak ridge over the
whole of the UK.
At the surface GFS brings a low over the UK, with NW'lies for SW England,
Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland lies under NE'lies. MetO has NW'lies
for all with a weak ridge to the west, while ECM brings lows over SE England
and NW Scotland, with light winds for most. GEM shows a weak trough over the
UK, with a mixture of westerlies and SW'lies.

Evolution to T+168
ECM shows NW'lies on day 6 as lows move eastwards. Day 7 sees a deep low to
the west, with SE'lies for Scotland and SW'lies elsewhere.
Day 6 with GFS shows a col over the UK, followed by a low on day 7. By then
winds are NW'lies over Scotland and Northern Ireland, with SW'lies for
England and Wales.

Looking further afield
Low pressure covers Northern Ireland on day 8 with ECM, leading to SE'lies
over Scotland and SW'lies elsewhere. Day 9 sees the low fill to the east of
Scotland, with strong northerlies for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Elsewhere winds are SW'lies. On day 10 a ridge forms to the west, with
NW'lies for all.
On day 8 GFS shows high pressure to the north and low pressure over northern
France, with NE'lies and NW'lies over the UK.There are further NE'lies for
all on day 9 as the low sinks southwards, followed by yet more NE'lies on
day 10.

Ensemble analysis
(http://91.121.94.83/modeles/gens/gra...ille=Lond res)
The ensembles continue to show 4 cold days, followed by a return to
near-average conditions.
