David Mitchell. Langtoft.

My work internet connection blocks the usual usenet servers, and I am
forced to use Google.

Does your employer know? Must be very understanding!

Lunchtime surfing only, of course.

It's ok, more especially if you use the tree view, but you will get
large quantities of spam postings and you will be unable to killfile
anyone.

There is a not very good Killfile for it if you use Firefox with
Greasemonkey.
http://www.penney.org/ggkiller.html
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748

A tip for using it is not to killfile a series of people or threads
but refresh after each addition to the filter. It will get rid of
posts everyone ignores but shows up any that get a reply. And
sometimes people you ignore will return. I think that depends on their
settings or newsreader.

Perhaps those using encryption or anonymous posters?
