It does indeed look very sad. It would have been better if they had
completely demolished it. I spent part of November and most of December
1963 there at the Radio-Sonde Training School - great fun! Bill Preston
was in charge of the school - anyone remember him?

Hi all,
Bill Preston was my dad! Who knows our paths may have crossed some fifty odd years ago. Occasionally dad would take my sister Mal and I to work with him and sometimes mum would put us both on the bus and we would meet dad at work. Mal and I felt very important as we got off that bus and walked across the field to the office which had a sign up saying MOD Property Keep Out!
This brings many fond memories back, we used to love going out to the balloon shed to see the weather balloon launched watching it for a moment or so before running in to track it! We were seated on office chairs which spun around much to our delight, before watching the screen following the balloon, and from what I can remember a little dot was the balloon. I think there were others in this room with headphones on also watching screens.
Sometimes dad would sit us in the classroom under strict instruction to behave! I think we were given paper and pencils to keep us quiet. I do remember some of the students, one being a Terence Tzonce (well it sounded like this to me!) I think it was Terence who could have been from somewhere like Persia who sent us a box of Turkish delight and Pistachio nuts. There was also another student who gave us a whole coconut in its original shell.
I also remember two ladies one was called Ann and she rode a scooter, years later after dad had retired he moved to Kirby Cross near Frinton in Essex. Whilst out shopping one day he bumped into Ann who lived just a short distance from dad.
Dad passed away ten years ago after a long and very interesting life, during this time of lockdown I have been going through old photographs and found one with dad at Hemsby with his headphones on. If I can find a way of posting it on the forum I will.
kind regards
Sue Preston
