It does seem an unusual location to record the top temperature.

.... the highest temperature on the SYNOPs was 22.3 at 1450Z, and it
stands out proud by about 2degC from adjacent stations on the
WeatherOnline plot. Looks as if there might have been some
contamination as a screen door was opened or similar.

Yes, either that, or a power glitch, or a failing battery. The max
seems to be 3degC too high for the location. The site has been
fully automated for some time but I suppose the screen could
have been opened for cleaning or maintenance (if such operations
are still deemed financially appropriate).

.... at 1209A, the UK 'Extremes' on the Met Office web site was
updated - now showing Crosby as the station with the highest
temperature at 23.5°C. With the highest hourly figure for this station
at 23.1°C (at 1450Z), an easterly gradient flow (lee side of the
Pennines), and near-continuous sunshine, this looks a plausible value
IMV.

Yep ... one of my correspondents is the official observer at
Prestatyn, not all that far from Crosby, and he logged 23.1°C
yesterday. There was a similar over-the-top max reported at
Castlederg (Co Tyrone) on Monday ... not sure how far that
one got before it was spotted.

Very true. It's a warmer day today generally. 23.5C has been exceeded
at a number of stations and 25C looks like it will be achieved, for
the first time this year, at several locations by the end of the
afternoon.

I can confirm it has been, here. 25.3C when I checked earlier, though it
might have gone slightly higher since.
