The Spring quarter of 2008 comprised contrasting months:
a cyclonic-northwesterly March, a cyclonic April, and an easterly May. The relevant charts are available at: http://www.climate-uk.com/monpre/08QQ.htm The main features of the sea-level pressure distribution we a broad zone of low pressure between latitudes 50 and 60 degN, extending from Quebec, across the entire Atlantic and most Europe with centres of 1008 mbar over NE Scotland and at 56N 42W; a weaker-than-normal Azores high at 1020 mbar; and a strong Arctic high with a centre of 1023mbar over NE Greenland. The anomaly field showed below-normal pressure over the entire European continent and over most of the Atlantic Ocean, and above-normal pressure over the Arctic Basin extending across Greenland and Iceland. The main anomaly centres we - 5mbar over southern Britain - 5 mbar between Moscow and Kiev + 6 mbar over SE Greenland. The anomalous flow was NE-ly across the northern half of the British Isles, and cyclonic/variable over the southern half.
