I was in Lee, and noticed that the door to the thermometer box was open. Although the sun wasn't shining in direct, it might well have affected the readings. |

Suggest that the Solent reading be taken with some caution. I was in Lee, and noticed that the door to the thermometer box was open. Although the sun wasn't shining in direct, it might well have affected the readings. Looks like the Met Office may have flagged the 1500 and 1600 readings as suspect - the usual red bars at http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...er_graphs.html are "whitened" out but the reported temperatures are visible. The sequence is: BST - Deg C - Wind Dir 1200 22.9 N-NNE 1300 24.6 N-NNE 1400 25.3 N-NNE 1500 26.6 N-NNE 1600 26.8 N-NNE 1700 23.0 ESE My own maximum 5 miles inland was at 1627 BST so that ties in with Solent and the max temp here was 24.9, so 2.0 deg C lower, which is not inconsistent with the usual gap between my _completely shaded_ screen and Solent MRSC, with a lightish offshore wind (9 to 14 mph) in sunny conditions at this time of year. The drop in temperature between 1600 and 1700 is consistent with the change of wind direction from offshore to onshore - I've been there on other occasions when this has happened (usually a sea Breeze) and a rapid 3.8 degrees C drop is not unusual when this happens in those conditions. So as far as the open screen door is concerned, yes it may have affected the readings but if so, I'd say by less than a degree C and quite possibly not at all. If you hadn't mentioned this incident, I wouldn't have been suspicious of Sunday's maximum there. Dave Fareham |

I think that's just sloppy coding on the website. Those bars are supposed to be 14 units high - see image filename http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/lib/imag...ph/grid14r.gif - but the site only has graphics up to 13 units high: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/lib/imag...ph/grid13r.gif . They've chosen the wrong scale for the graph, in other words, and those two hourly readings have gone off the scale. |
