Default Today's model interpretation (12/06/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon (GMT) on Monday.
Issued 0546z, 12th June 2008

The middle of the week will see low pressure moving over or close to the UK,
with rain likely across much of the UK.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS

NNW'lies and NW'lies cover the UK, with high pressure to the NW. There are
further NW'lies tomorrow as the high persists. On Saturday a trough moves
southwards over Scotland, with WNW'lies elsewhere. Sunday sees a col over
Northern Ireland, Wales and SW England, with NW'lies elsewhere.

The jetstream chart continues to show a split jet to the west and a marked
trough over the UK and western Europe. At the 500hPa level there's a slack
WNW'ly gradient, with a large and complex upper low to the NW, north and NE.
MetO shows WNW'lies aloft too, while ECM shows lower heights and NW'lies.
GEM has upper northerlies with a trough to the east.
At the surface GFS brings a weak ridge over England and Wales, with
westerlies aloft. MetO has a ridge over Ireland and a col over Scotland,
with northerlies for much of the UK. ECM has a col over the UK and GEM
brings NW'lies for all.

Evolution to T+168
Day 6 with ECM brings SW'lies for all with a low to the west. The low
deepens and moves slowly ESE'wards on day 7, with northerlies for Scotland
and Northern Ireland and strong SW'lies for much of England.
GFS brings strong SW'lies over the UK on day 6 due to a deep low to the NW.
The SW'lies persist on day 7.

Looking further afield
On day 8 with ECM lighter NW'lies cover the UK as the low moves away to the
ENE. Day 9 sees a ridge over the UK with light winds for all. High pressure
lies to the east on day 10 with SE'lies for all.
GFS shows a secondary low over Ireland on day 8 with light winds for most.
The low deepens over the North Sea on day 9, with light northerlies and
WSW'lies over the UK. By day 10 a new low deepens to the south, with a col
and light winds over the UK.

Ensemble analysis

The ensembles continue to show a cool spell on the way.
