Default Today's model interpretation (18/06/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon (GMT) on Sunday.
Issued 0537z, 18th June 2008

The first half of next week will see low pressure over or near the UK, with
all areas seeing rain. Temperatures won't be far off normal overall, buoyed
by warmer nights due to cloud cover. Beyond that, ECM shows an east/west
split while GFS keeps the unsettled theme going.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS

Low pressure lies to the west of Scotland, with SW'lies and SSW'lies over
the UK. Tomorrow a trough moves slowly eastwards and on Friday the winds
become westerlies and WSW'lies as the trough moves over England and Wales.
Saturday sees a ridge over England and Wales, with westerlies elsewhere.

The jetstream chart shows a southerly-tracking jet, with the main flow over
Iberia and France. At the 500hPa level there's a SW'ly flow, as is the case
with MetO and ECM. GEM also shows SW'lies aloft.
At the surface GFS brings a trough and NE'lies over England and Wales, with
another trough and SSW'lies for Scotland and Northern Ireland. MetO shows a
col and ECM has light ESE'lies and easterlies, with a col over Scotland and
a low to the SW. GEM shows a col as well.

Evolution to T+168
Day 6 with ECM brings a deep low over the Irish Sea, with strong NE'lies for
Scotland, NE'ly gales for Northern Ireland and strong SW'lies for England
and Wales. Day 7 sees strong NW'lies and WNW'lies as the low moves
ENE'wards.
GFS brings SW'lies for all on day 6 due to a low to the NW. Southerlies
affect the UK on day 7 as low pressure deepens to the west.

Looking further afield
A col covers much of the UK on day 8 with ECM, followed by SE'lies on day 9
as pressure builds to the east. Day 10 sees further SE'lies.
GFS shows low pressure over the UK on day 8 and on day 9 the low deepens to
the north, introducing moderate westerlies. Day 10 sees SW'lies over the UK,
as the low becomes complex to the north.

Ensemble analysis
(http://91.121.94.83/modeles/gens/gra...ille=Lond res)
The ensembles show a zonal "sine wave" pattern developing, with a fair
amount of rain.
