Default Today's model interpretation (19/06/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon (GMT) on Monday.
Issued 0533z, 19th June 2008

Low pressure now looks like struggling to cross the UK during the first half
of next week, with northern and western areas likely to see a fair bit of
rain. Southern and eastern areas remain at risk of rain, but at a lower
chance than yesterday.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS

Low pressure covers Scotland, with a trough over Wales. Ahead of the trough
winds are gusty southerlies, with westerlies following behind. Tomorrow the
low deepens to the NE, with WSW'lies for all. A weak ridge covers England
and Wales on Saturday, with a col for Northern Ireland and westerlies for
Scotland. Sunday sees a new low move up from the SW, with SE'lies across the
UK.

The jetstream chart continues to show a southerly-tracking jet, with
westerlies at the 500hPa level. MetO also shows westerlies aloft, as is the
case with ECM and GEM.
At the surface GFS brings a col and light winds. MetO shows a col as well
for many, although Scotland lies under NW'lies from a low over Scandinavia.
ECM has westerlies and WSW'lies, with the UK between a low to the NE and a
ridge over Biscay. GEM is similar to ECM, with WNW'lies instead.

Evolution to T+168
Day 6 with ECM brings southerlies ahead of a low to the west. A trough
crosses Scotland on day 7, with SSW'lies for the UK.
GFS brings SSE'lies on day 6, again with a low to the west. Southerlies
persist on day 7 as the low remains in situ.

Looking further afield
Warm SE'lies cover the UK on day 8 with ECM, as low pressure deepens to the
west. A trough moves NE'wards over the UK on day 9, leading to SSW'lies. By
day 10 southerlies affect the UK as the low fills and moves slowly
eastwards.
GFS shows SSW'lies on day 8 due to a low to the west and a trough over
northern Scotland. The low moves slowly eastwards on day 9, bringing
southerlies as a result. By day 10 lows lie to the NE and SW, with
southerlies for much of the UK.

Ensemble analysis

The ensembles continue to show a zonal "sine wave" pattern.
