Updated today: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...008/index.html UK forecast for remainder of Summer 2008 Temperature We continue to predict an enhanced chance of more frequent cloudy and cool spells compared to recent summers prior to 2007. Nevertheless, mean temperatures are more likely to be above the 1971-2000 average. Rainfall Our forecasting methods favour above-average or near-average rainfall for the remainder of the summer period. Geez How grim can THAT be. Now all thats left till Autumn arrives (which ain't long now) is eternal optimism, (the main thrust of this newsgroups devotees) or we cling to the usual " it could be worse" comments - well don't bother with either, I already know. DaveR Honestly, you are living in the wrong country, Dave. This is a forecast which reflects the "typical" British summer. This is what we get from our position on the Western edge of a continent facing a large ocean. The forecast implies warmth and sunshine, from time to time and possibly more of it than we might expect, if we took the long- term average into account. Dave; what exactly do you expect from our summer? Paul |

Dave; what exactly do you expect from our summer? I think he expects a Mediterranean style climate in southern England. Apart from in the most exceptional summers, such conditions don't normally persist for more than a week or so at a time. -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl |

Every summer we have is not an averageone though. Thats my reply. DR You are right; for a combination of rainfall, sunshine and temperature, NO UK summer has ever been average. However, in most of your messages, you appear to be searching for an above average summer for the last two of those and a below average one for the first. What you are wanting appears to be a much better than average British summer, which is fine; that would suit me too. It's just that a much better than average summer is, by definition unusual, but you appear to think that we should get one and you are constantly grumpy in this "typical" 2008 summer, when we aren't getting one (so far). That doesn't add up. What do you want out of a British summer is my question and forgive me for saying, but what you gave wasn't an answer! *)) Paul |

I think this is, briefly, on the cards soon for a few days in the outlook. I also want warmth and expect to have a run of cyclonic westerlies so that comes with the package because of course rain is required to make things grow. Now I am lampooned because I grumble whenever I see an outlook like that you had posted from the Met today. It sorta writes it off despite its only a forecast but I have a great faith in it being so, strangely. But this is just my nature. I dont think its unreasonable to expect it to be a little warmer by the 25th June but evidently those on here do. I tell you something its far from balmy this evening thats for sure and the woolies, hot water bottle, central heating has rarely been off so far this year. Now this is normal for you I guess most years. Its coming to understand this that I have have a problem with. DR |

DR Many of us feel the same Dave, but at least you live in the sunny SE, nearest to our Euro neighbours who enjoy a proper summers and sunny settled winters. Nature operates a similar scoring system to the Eurovision song contest. Poor old Blighty is always hopeful but somehow inevitably gets disappointed. What keeps us all here? The rain, the wind or the tax? |
