Default Shetland warmth

Can anybody comment on how usual/unusual
the current warmth in the Shetlands is?

05/1200 from Ogimet
Sumburgh A/P 20
Baltasound 19.5
Lerwick 18.5

My correspondent reports folk divesting themselves
of their fleeces in the Islands capital.

Thanks

I worked in Shetland many years ago and I can tell you that 21C in Lerwick
is not that common.

They'd be dropping like flies in that heat :-)

I too worked in Shetland between 1985 and 1991.
I can remember attending a function at Lerwick Observatory. Walking home
down the hill afterwards the spray was being blown off the Sandy Loch
reservoir and turning to ice before it got to me and my partner.
Vicious little bullets they were, but they helped with the sobering up
process :-)

My very first shift I had to walk up that hill against a force 9 at 0530 in
the morning. Sheesh I only made it because some kind soul stopped to give me
a lift. Got to work and the wind was 45 knots gusting 60 knots, the night
shift said it was getting a bit windy, a bit windy ... ! What a place to
live.

Pretty unusual, I'd say, given that the all-time record is 24°C
(I think).

Wasn't too bad for me having been born and brought up in Orkney and spent
most of my working life at sea.

Pretty unusual, I'd say, given that the all-time record is 24°C

Something sticks in my mind that 24°C is the record for Orkney as well. I
would have thought that Shetland's record would have been lower than Orkney
but you never know.

I was in Orkney when the thermometer 'hit' 21°C. All the locals were moaning
and asked how I coped with the dreadful heat and humidity being out 'in it'
all day long. I replied that I thought it was the first really pleasant day
I had experienced in the 6 weeks I had been there that summer.

One of the Orcadians visited me the following year in July 1995. They had
only ever visited Aberdeen a few times. It was during that very hot summer
and it nearly killed them. They spent the first few days just lying down and
covering their head with a wet flannel. It was exceptionally hot but they
had never experienced anything like it before. Gradually they acclimatised
and started to enjoy the hot evenings outside in the garden and swimming in
the nearby river.
