... I think it is this one http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...re/7502818.stm That's it, was to ****ed off last night to provide a link! Will get a refund for the tickets and will attempt to get a refund on the train ticket this morning. Shame it's been cancelled as the weather's looking pretty good out the window, ground there must be soaked though if they've had to cancel such a big event. Will cost them tons in refunds. |

They've had a considerable amount of rain in a short time, added to yesterday (Friday) by narrow bands of intense convection rainfall. Using data via OgiMet and WeatherOnline ... For July, up to 06Z this morning, the total rainfall for Brize Norton (a crude proxy for Fairford) is 81.3 mm, with the total for the past 7 days 74 mm; the local average is around 43 mm (as with many other spots in the south - July being, usually, a dry month), so they've had roughly double normal all-month rainfall since the beginning of the month, much within the past week. The preceding month (according to charts on the Met O site) was also within the 125% anomaly isopleth, indeed Fairford (difficult to be precise from those maps), may have been within the 150% zone. Has echoes of the Silverstone problems of several years back. Martin. -- Martin Rowley West Moors, East Dorset (UK): 17m (56ft) amsl Lat: 50.82N Long: 01.88W NGR: SU 082 023 |

You know what I fear Alastair. That UK climate means out, i.e. summers become cooler and winters become warmer and rain is evenly distributed throughout the year. Hope I'm wrong (I often am!). What the media should have stressed is that the Duxford show today is
NOT cancelled. My son works at Duxford and apparently they have been receiving numerous calls asking why it is cancelled. DUXFORD IS NOT CANCELLED. Although (because of my contacts - wife also works there) I have a free ticket I won't be going as I can see quite a bit of the action from my garden! Jack |

Will -- Will, I just checked my monthly averages for 1991-2007, and comared them with ther 1971-2000 Penzance norm, with the following result:- Jan +0.8 Feb +0.9 Mar +0.8 Apr +0.9 May +1.1 June +0.6 July +0.4 Aug +0.8 Sep +0.6 Oct +0.5 Nov +0.8 Dec -0.2 So December is the only month with a negative anomoly, and the greatest warming is in Spring. Once again May 2008 has been exceptionally warm. I've also looked at rainfall recently, and the main change over the 1971-2000 norm was wet autumns. (So I'm rather hoping your fears are unfounded!) So December is the only month with a negative anomoly, and the
greatest warming is in Spring. Once again May 2008 has been exceptionally warm. Apart from last year's wet summer for the UK as a whole, I thought the trend (pre-2007) was for increasingly drier summers and wetter winters. With June being dry here, if the summer settles and the rest of July is dry as well as August then this summer could still end up being drier than normal (a long shot I know!). Interesting to note that until recently (post 2000), June was the only month that stubbornly refused to show any signs of warming from the long-term CET data set. Since 2000 I believe that this month is now showing a warming trend. ________________ Nick. Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |
