Default Today's model interpretation (24/07/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon (GMT) on Monday.
Issued 0510z, 24th July 2008

A weakening trough will move northwards over the UK on Tuesday, with the
majority of rain for western areas. Wednesday will see low pressure to the
west with gusty southerlies for Northern Ireland and western Scotland, but
elsewhere winds will be much lighter. As the weekend approaches ECM is keen
to move the nearby Atlantic low across the UK, but GFS holds it at bay for a
couple more days. By day 10 both ECM and GFS show less settled weather
across the UK.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS

High pressure lies to the NE, with ESE'lies across the UK. There are further
ESE'lies tomorrow as a trough approaches from the SW, followed by light
winds on Saturday due to a col. Sunday sees a col persist over the UK.

The jetstream chart shows a convoluted jet near the UK, with a trough to the
west and a blocking ridge to the east and NE. The jet heads northwards and
NW'wards over the UK. At the 500hPa level there's an omega block to the NNE,
with the UK under the trough supporting it to the west. MetO also shows a
trough over the UK, as does ECM. Neither of those show an omega block,
however, with a ridge to the east rather than a high to the NE. GEM brings
an omega block to the NE, again with the UK under a trough.
At the surface GFS has a weak trough, leading to southerlies and SE'lies.
MetO has a trough over Ireland with SSE'lies for much of the UK, while ECM
brings light SE'lies and a weak trough over Ireland. GEM shows anticyclonic
SE'lies over the UK.

Evolution to T+168
Day 6 with ECM shows SSW'lies and a trough over Scotland. On day 7 the UK
lies under SSE'lies, with low pressure still to the west and high pressure
over the North Sea.
GFS shows southerlies on day 6 with low pressure to the west, followed by
SE'lies and easterlies on day 7 as the low moves NW'wards.

Looking further afield
On day 8 with ECM heights fall and a low moves over Northern Ireland.
SE'lies cover SCotland and northern England, with SW'lies elsewhere. On day
9 SE'lies cover the UK and on day 10 the winds become southerlies for most,
as the upper and surface lows move slowly eastwards.
A col covers the UK on day 8 with GFS, followed by SW'lies on day 9 as the
low to the west finally moves eastwards. On day 10 a deep low lies to the
west, with SW'lies for all.

The ensembles show temperatures at or above average for the next 10 days.
