Default Today's model interpretation (29/07/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon (GMT) on Saturday.
Issued 0511z, 29th July 2008

The models show an unsettled weekend for many, with low pressure close to
the UK. All areas are at risk of rain, with the heaviest expected in the
north and west. Into next week the low will slowly move away, allowing a
weak ridge to bring a settled interlude.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS

Low pressure lies to the SW, with easterlies for much of the UK. Tomorrow
southerlies cover the UK as the low deepens to the west and on Thursday the
winds become SE'lies due to a trough to the south. Friday sees the trough
move northwards over the UK, bringing easterlies to Scotland and southerlies
elsewhere.

The jetstream chart shows a strong jet across the north Atlantic, with the
jet heading eastwards over southern England. At the 500hPa level there's a
low over the North Sea and a westerly flow over southern England and France.
MetO has SW'lies aloft with a low to the west, while ECM is similar. GEM has
WSW'lies aloft with a low west of Scotland.
At the surface GFS has a low east of Scotland and a trough over Wales.
SW'lies cover England and Wales, with NW'lies elsewhere. MetO shows SSW'lies
for all due to a weak low to the west, while ECM has stronger SSW'lies due
to a deeper low. GEM also shows a low west of Scotland, this time with
moderate SW'lies for the UK.

Evolution to T+168
Day 6 with ECM shows SW'lies for all due to a low west of Scotland. The low
fills as it moves slowly eastwards, with lighter SSW'lies as a result on day
7.
GFS shows WNW'lies over the UK on day 6, with a weak trough. Day 7 sees
NW'lies as the trough persists.

Looking further afield
On day 8 with ECM WNW'lies cover the UK, with a ridge to the west. The ridge
moves over Ireland on day 9, with NNW'lies elsewhere. On day 10 the ridge
covers the UK, with light winds for all.
A ridge crosses the UK on day 8 with GFS, leading to light winds. Day 9 sees
a trough over Scotland and Northern Ireland, with southerlies and SSE'lies
over the UK. There's little change on day 10.

Ensemble analysis
(http://91.121.94.83/modeles/gens/gra...ille=Lond res)
The ensembles show a warm blip on Thursday, followed by a return to
near-average conditions.
