Maximum temperature here today a meagre 13.3C. Quite shocking given the time of year.
Also light showery rain all day with some heavier pulses late afternoon.

10 hours of rain approximately recorded thus far at EGNX, look at those temperatures too -

That's close to the record for a low max in August. 31st August 1978
springs to mind with 12s and 13s all over eastern England and the Midlands,
and possibly the odd 11 as well.

That of course means an exceptional range between the highest max
and lowest max ...

These are just the lowest max. temps that appear in the SYNOPs of course -
apart from Copley.

I see that Leeds-Bradford Airport - for example - reported hourly
temperatures of only 10 or 11°C for most of the day

Yes, I've just seen the NCMs. They include 11.5 at Emley Moor,
12.2 at Leeds/Bradford, 12.3 at Ceinws, and 12.3 at Boltshope Park ...
all what we might call medium-level sites, between 200m and 400m
at a guess.

Hi, Philip,

22nd August 1986 gave day max 9.9C and 09Z - 09Z max 10.2C at my old
site in Low Etherley(160m). There have been several sub 12C maxima.
Lowest so far in Copley, since 1995, is 11.6C on 9th August 1999. We
were running at 11.4C yesterday until 1700Z when the sun came out and
raised it to 12.7C.

Around the date you mention, 30th August 1978 recorded 12.8C at Low
Etherley.

As you know, a lot of low max records are lost at climate stations with
09Z - 09Z readings if the following morning is warmer.

HTH,
