Looking at Roger Brugge's site seems to confirm my perception of
central southern England being disproportionately cool this summer compared to say east Anglia or the Midlands - with places like Middle Wallop, Boscombe Down, and South Farnborough (I take it this = Farnborough, Hants) registering decidedly low August (and to a lesser extent July) mean maximum temperatures, while Kent, Essex and the west Midlands register temperatures around the norm - and some northern locations like Hawarden seemingly decidedly warm. I take it this is due to a combination of frequent onshore winds and unusually cool sea surface temperatures, caused in turn by a lack of any really prolonged settled spells since last winter? Nick |

So far all months this year here in the Otter Valley have had a mean
temperature above the LTA. December 2007 was the last month with a mean temp below the LTA. This July did end up only slightly above the LTA. This August's mean temp is currently running at +0.6°C (17.2°C), predominantly due to the prevalence of warm nights but the days have been cooler than normal. What does amaze me is that despite the atrocious weather which has dominated June, July & August so far, this summer will probably end up warmer than the LTA. ________________ Nick. Nick Nick, The summer of 2008 is so far returning mean maximum temperatures significantly below the average in Romsey, with July 1.5C below normal and August (to the 12th) running at 1.9C below (June was 0.3C above average). Opposing this, the August nights are (to the 13th) 1.8C above the norm. Nigel |

What's so striking about this summer is the lack of that persistent "mild warmth" in the air which normally appears early July and persists (due to the warm seas) till at least mid Sep - many, many days have felt too cold to stay still outside comfortably, rare at this time of the year this far south. On the other hand this does not seem to be a 2007 style summer. It reminds me more of that run of disappointing summers from 1985-88. But it is not a "typical British summer", at least not for the 1980-2008 period in southern England. A "typical British *bad* summer" maybe... Nick |

Poor you getting it in June as well - round here June was mostly OK, probably down to that westerly spell with higher pressure at the end, always a weather type where the areas more towards the SE are favoured. I guess day maximum temps are more meaningful for answering the "how good was this summer?" question, though round here night time temps seem to have been on the cold side too, aside from the 21-31 July period - balmy evenings have been rare. Otter Valley, Devon "despite the atrocious weather " but isn't that just average? like expected for our kind of Summers. So I keep getting reminded. So I say whats new then?
