Recorded a minimum last night of 17.2°C making it the highest minimum
temperature since September 6th 2006 (17.7C). Minimum temperatures above 17°C happen very infrequently in this rural, valley location but it is usually between now and mid-September that the warmest nights of the year occur, probably due to the sea being at its warmest. The warmth of the nights this year is in contrast to 2007 when the whole summer seemed to be dominated by cool/cold nights with very few (if any) warm nights. Monthly minimum temperatures for 2007/08: Mean Low High May 07 7.8°C 0.7°C 13.0°C May 08 10.2°C 4.8°C 14.4°C Jun 07 11.1°C 6.7°C 13.8°C Jun 08 10.1°C 5.1°C 15.7°C Jul 07 11.3°C 5.7°C 15.0°C Jul 08 12.6°C 7.7°C 17.1°C Aug 07 10.6°C 5.9°C 15.5°C Aug 08 13.6°C 7.4°C 17.2°C Sep 07 9.1°C 4.1°C 14.3°C August 2007 was particularly cool at night, I suspect the high incidence of cloudy nights this month have prevented night-time temperatures dropping. ________________ Nick. This is from our website this morning Nick, with a reference to the warmth of last night: "Although rather wet and cloudy, this month will end with temperatures around the average for our region, probably 0.2C above the 30-year mean temperature for August, although temperatures by day have been 1.0C below normal. Warm cloudy nights have made up the difference of course; last night for example, was the warmest August night (min = 17.8C) for four years in Coventry (19.5C minimum in 2004) - with records dating back to 1892, only 6 August months have had minimum overnight temperatures as high as last night."
