Default Today's model interpretation (30/09/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon (GMT) on Saturday.
Issued 0505z, 30th September 2008

The weekend looks like ending on an unsettled note, with low pressure close
by. All areas will see wind and rain and the pattern will remain similar
into the new week too.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS
http://85.214.49.20/pics/Rtavn001.png
Westerlies cover the UK, with a low to the north. The westerlies strengthen
tomorrow as the low deepens to the ENE. On Thursday a trough moves SE'wards,
leading to WNW'lies for all. NW'lies persist on Friday, with a trough to the
east and a low to the NE.

The jetstream chart shows a strong jet over the western Atlantic with a
much weaker flow over the eastern Atlantic and the UK. The 500hPa chart
shows upper westerlies over the UK, while MetO has WNW'lies aloft instead.
ECM has upper westerlies and GEM shows a low over the North Sea and upper
NW'lies for the UK.
At the surface, GFS shows low pressure to the west of Scotland and light
winds for much of the UK. Southern England and Wales sees strong to gale
force WSW'lies, however. MetO has a weak ridge over the UK and westerlies
for most, while ECM brings strong SW'lies with a low to the NW. GEM has low
pressure over the North Sea and a trough over Scotland. Winds are SW'lies
for England and Wales, with northerlies or NNW'lies elsewhere.

Evolution to T+168
Day 6 with ECM brings a deep low to the NE and a trough over eastern
England. Winds are NW'lies for most as a result, followed by southerlies and
SE'lies on day 7 ahead of a low to the WSW.
On day 6 GFS shows SW'lies for most with a low to the west of Scotland.
SW'lies persist on day 7.

Looking further afield
On day 8 with ECM low pressure covers the North Sea, leading to southerlies
for Scotland, SSW'lies for Northern Ireland and westerlies elsewhere. On day
9 a deep low to the NW brings strong to gale force SSW'lies and on day 10
the winds ease somewhat as the low moves NE'wards.
GFS brings a low over Ireland on day 8, with southerlies and SE'lies over
the UK as a result. On day 9 the winds become SSW'lies as another low
approaches from the west. and on day 10 moderate SW'lies cover the UK due to
a low to the north.

Ensemble analysis
(http://91.121.94.83/modeles/gens/gra...ille=Lon dres)
The ensembles show a cool spell to end the working week, followed by a wet
spell with temperatures around average.

.... welcome back! Sorry to hear of Demon problems; I used to be a
customer of theirs (my first ISP/dial-up) and always found their
service good, so was sad to hear from many here that the newsfeed
wasn't what it might be.

Martin.
