Default Today's model interpretation (11/10/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon (GMT) on Wednesday.
Issued 0513z, 11th October 2008

The outlook is changeable, with troughs and ridges alternating across the UK
as a strong jet brings systems in from the Atlantic. The timing of the
troughs/ridges is wildly different between models, so all that can be said
is all areas will see rain at times in the latter half of next week. There
will be some sunnier, drier days interspersed too.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS

SSW'lies cover the UK, with a trough to the west. A ridge crosses England
and Wales tomorrow, with SW'lies elsewhere. A trough moves eastwards on
Monday, with SSW'lies, followed by a ridge and WSW'lies on Tuesday.

The jetstream chart shows a SW'ly jet over the UK, with a trough to the
west. SW'lies also appear at the 500hPa level, again with a trough to the
west. MetO has WSW'lies aloft and a weaker trough to the west, while ECM has
SW'lies and a trough similar to the GFS. GEM brings WSW'lies and again shows
a trough to the west.
At the surface, GFS brings a trough to the west and a low to the SW, leading
to SSW'lies over the UK. The winds are light over much of England due to a
weak ridge. MetO has a transitory ridge over Northern Ireland, with
westerlies as a result. ECM brings WSW'lies, with a trough to the west and a
weak ridge over the North Sea. GEM has WSW'lies too, with a secondary low to
the west.

Evolution to T+168
Day 6 with ECM shows a trough deepening as it heads SE'wards over the UK.
Strong NW'lies cover the UK, followed by SW'lies on day 7 as a ridge moves
over England and Wales.
On day 6 with GFS low pressure lies to the NE, leading to NW'lies and
WNW'lies for the UK. A ridge lies to the west on day 7, with NW'lies
persisting.

Looking further afield
On day 8 with ECM a trough crosses the UK, with SW'lies for most. A low
deepens to the west on day 9, with southerlies, followed by SW'ly gales on
day 10 as the low depeens and moves over northern Scotland.
GFS brings strong southerlies on day 8 ahead of a trough to the west.
WSW'lies cover the UK as the trough moves over the North Sea and fills on
day 9 and on day 10 colder WSW'lies cover the UK.

Ensemble analysis
(http://91.121.94.83/modeles/gens/gra...ille=Lon dres)
The ensembles show a much coler spell aloft from the middle of next week,
with more in the way of rain than of late.
