Default Today's model interpretation (28/10/08)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon on Saturday.
Issued 0529, 28th October 2008

The models are split today. ECM shows a ridge and generally settled
conditions to end the weekend and start the next week, while GFS shows a
much less settled outlook.

NW'lies cover the UK, with a high to the west. Tomorrow there are NW'lies
and NNW'lies due to a weak ridge over England and Wales, with NW'ly gales
for NE Scotland and the Northern Isles due to a nearby small but intense
low. Low pressure covers the Celtic Sea on Thursday, bringing cool SE'lies
across all areas except Scotland, which lies under easterlies and NE'lies.
Friday sees northerlies across the UK as high pressure moves towards the UK
from the NW.

The jetstream chart shows a split jet over the North Atlantic, with the
southern branch being the most active. The UK lies under a trough, with the
southern branch of the jet crossing Morocco. At the 500hPa level there's an
upper trough over the UK, while MetO has NE'lies aloft and a trough to the
south. ECM brings NE'lies too, while GEM has an upper ridge over the UK.
At the surface, GFS brings low pressure over southern England, with
easterlies and NE'lies across the UK. MetO has a col over Scotland and
Northern Ireland, with NE'lies elsewhere, as is the case with ECM. GEM has a
ridge over all areas except Northern Ireland and northern Scotland, with
SW'lies there.

Evolution to T+168
Day 6 with ECM shows a ridge over Ireland, with northerlies for England and
Wales and SW'lies elsewhere. On day 7 the ridge builds across Northern
Ireland and Scotland, with northerlies persisting elsewhere.
On day 6 with GFS a col covers the UK, with light winds as a result. The col
persists on day 7.

Looking further afield
On day 8 with ECM a col covers much of the UK, with light winds as a result.
Day 9 sees the col persist and on day 10 SW'lies affect the whole of the UK,
with a ridge to the south.
GFS brings a col over England and Wales on day 8, with southerlies
elsewhere ahead of a low to the west. Day 9 sees SW'lies persist for
northern areas, with light winds across England and Wales. There's little
change on day 10.

Ensemble analysis
(http://91.121.94.83/modeles/gens/gra...ille=Lon dres)
The ensembles show a typical zonal "sine wave" pattern after this week.
