A rather chilly night for here. Awoke to the first grass and air frost of
the autumn and the first air frost since the 15th of April, which was in fact the frostiest month of this topsy-turvy weather year so far with 5 air frosts and bucking the trend of frostless Aprils. Today's air frost of -1.2°C now pushes the total up to 15 for this year. The coldest night of 2008 so far has been -3.2°C on the 2nd of February which was rather sharp for here as frosts are usually in the range of -0.1°C to -2.0°C. There was not an air or ground frost in 2005, 2006 or 2007 (i.e., since moving here). Beautifully clear air making for excellent visibility on a drive over to Laaarrnceston this morning, with a dusting of snow on the higher ground of Dartmoor but sadly none of the dramatic cumulonimbus clouds with well defined anvils, which have greeted me at dawn on the previous two mornings, being lit up orange by the rising sun. A max of only 7.1°C, easily the coldest October day recorded and the coldest day since the 15th of February (6.3°C). The fact that it had clouded over by midday didn't help. Has been raining now since late afternoon. ________________ Nick. Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

Hi Nick,
No snow lying here, but a min. of -2.1C was jolly cold for October with a max. today of just 5.8C (circa 6 degrees below normal). Rain and sleet this evening, but now dry and turning milder with a temp. of 3.9C at 2045. Will (Haytor, Devon, 1017 feet asl) -- "Nick Gardner" wrote in message ... A rather chilly night for here. Yesterday was rather warmer in east Scotland, reaching the dizzy heights of 6.5C here (following the record low high of 3.3 on Tuesday). Yesterday evening the temperature fell to -2.4C at 8 o'clock. I thought we were in for a stonker, but the temperature then rose and it started raining at midnight. Odd: no snow, no ice, very disappointing. But that's still the lowest October minimum I've recorded here (in twelve years). We had our first frost of the year Tuesday (a lttle earlier than average here) and the first snow last week (just about the earliest snow date). Another glorious day though today. A very interesting spell of weather. Trevor From 10 miles NW of Dundee, "Scotland's sunniest city" http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~taharley/ |
