The 29th was remarkable in that there was an extensive covering of snow all
day although some melting did occur during the day. The mean temperature
for the day was 1.2C which is cold even for January and February. I would
tenatatively estimate that the probability of such an event was around 1 in
100 ( the 1 in 20 temperature for the day is around 6C). The effect of the
cold spell at the end of the moth resulted in an October colder than the
1971-2000 average.
