Scilly was wet, but it's not part of Cornwall of course.

Really?
I'd always assumed offshore islands like Scilly would be
part of their nearest county.
So what kind of jurasdiction do they have there, are they
effectively a 'county' in ther own right?

... the Isles of Scilly are administered by the Council of the Isles
of Scilly, which is a unitary authority responsible for all the
'normal' council matters from education to rubbish
collection/disposal.

The islands are part of the Duchy of Cornwall, and the Duchy own a
reasonable chunk of the buildings. The Duchy has owned (effectively)
the islands since the 14th century.

Even after 2009 April (new unitary authority for Cornwall), the IoS
will not be subsumed into the administrative infrastructure of
Cornwall.

For all these reasons, a lot of people will tend to refer to the
broader area of the SW peninsula (for geographic purposes) as "
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly ".

I'm not sure the Shetland islanders like being regarded as part of
Scotland - but perhaps that's another story ;-)

Martin.

I think it's because the Duchy of Cornwall own large chunks (but by no
means all) of Scilly, that the confusion arises. It's a misleading
title, as they own land in 23 counties, and only a very small bit of
Cornwall. Poundbury is one Charlie boy's most recent investments.

Scillonians talk of visiting Cornwall, in the same way as the Cornish
visit Scilly.
