Default Care needed interpreting 850 hPa temperatures

Many enthusiasts use 850 hPa temperatures as a guide to whether wintry
precip. is likely or not (-5C is a common threshold). This is fine but care
is needed when there are large sea level pressure variations. If the
pressure is very low (say below 980 hPa) then the 850 hPa level will be
closer to the ground and certainly over the sea the 850hPa temperature will
be consequently higher. Similarly in high pressure (say above 1020 hPa) the
850 hPa temperature will usually decrease.

The best wintry precip. guide IMHO is height of wet-bulb freezing level but
this is not readily available in model charts to non-professionals, sadly.
