Here in Leeds the mean temperature for the first 12 days of this winter
month is 2.0 C. This is the coldest start this Century to any December, but I was wondering if we had anything on the CET. Most people on this NG will know that December 1981 was ranked one of the coldest December's on record, but how does December 2008 compare. Is it the coldest since 1981?? |

The average temperature in Coventry is 3.5C below average in the first 11 days, but still not as cold as 1995. And it is going to get milder! Here the 1st-11th is the coldest since my records began in 1990, and just slightly colder than the start of Dec 1995. The Met Office have a press release: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporat...r20081212.html The first para says that the first third of December had an "average temperature" (I assume they mean CET, but it doesn't actually say so) of 1.7 °C, and that this is the lowest such since 1976 (0.8 °C). -- Bewdley, Worcs. ~90m asl. |

Is it the coldest since 1981?? CET's are he http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research...HadCET_act.txt To save you looking the Dec 1981 CET was 0.3°C, so we've some way to go yet. The first few days of Dec 1981 were very mild and it reached 15°C in Aberdeen on the 3rd, according to Weather Log. The general circulation was very anomalous and in a very unusual way in that the Icelandic Low was displaced a long way SE to be over much of the UK. The temperature anomaly was least in the south, unusual for a very cold month. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |

A more meaningful measure for me is that my pond has been frozen all month (indeed since 29 November). Trevor Lundie, near Dundee http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~taharley/ |

I wish people wouldn't say coldest, or whatever this century. As it's only 8 years old. A better measure would be in the last 25 or 50 years. |
