The air over London was noticeable clear on the drive into London
tonight - the sun was still clearly bright and visible as it touched the horizon - something you see very rarely with the smog that usually envelops the capital. The silhouette of the Gherkin, Tower 42, Barbican and Canary Wharf looked dramatic against the yellow disk. It's just a shame I didn't have a camera to hand... |

This is a good post but sadly the West Country types that dominate this newsgroup will have no interest. Tower42 is trained on blowing up the whole of Devon including the Tor from an Exeter bounce platform. I bet they didnt know that lol DaveR westLondon |

the horizon - something you see very rarely with the smog that usually
envelops the capital. The silhouette of the Gherkin, Tower 42, I lived in London for nearly 7 years and I don't really have any memories of 'smogs' except once, and that was during a heatwave in August 1997. It was the photochemical variety. On the whole London has reasonably good air quality given that it is a large city. I was involved in a few studies regarding air pollution in London (with the UPRC) and the most insidious form was the invisible PM10s from bus, lorry & taxi diesel engines (this was before electrostatic precipitators were widely fitted to large diesel engines). Using SEM (electron microscopy) I studied these particulates that were captured using masks that were worn by courier cyclists. I also did a study looking at the particulates from passive smoking in pubs. The latter had air pollution in the order of magnitudes greater even than the most polluted street in the City. ________________ Nick. Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

Here, in the Chilterns about 50km NNW of central London, horizontal visibility at sunset was about 8-10km, there was a marked, moderately shallow haze layer with a top around 800-900ft amsl, and the sun was obscured by haze before it reached the horizon. Interesting looking at the nitrogen dioxide levels from the sensors at http://www.londonair.org.uk/london/asp/default.asp I suppose if the Chinese can create clean air in Beijing, we could try the same by having enforced bank holidays two days in a row.... |

By 1900, however, it did not seem quite so clear and I recorded "Moderate" rather than "Good". Also noticed here after sunset was a distinct yellow glare to the SW with a purple top edge, later fading to a red/purple band along the horizon. This almost certainly due to aerosols from that volcano which blew in the Aleutians a couple of months ago. -- - Yokel - oo oo OOO OOO OO 0 OO ) ( I ) ( ) ( /\ ) ( Yokel @ Ashurst New Forest SU 336 107 17m a.s.l.
