Brussels on Monday 5th January

It started to snow soon after midnight and was still snowing at
daybreak. Light snow continued during the morning but it stopped by
about 11.00 local time. Further slight snow for a time mid-
afternoon. Overcast throughout daylight hours but the cloud cleared
rapidly after dark. Temperature just exceeded 0°C during the morning
but fell slowly through the afternoon as a moderate NE to ENE wind set
in.

More snow than was forecast yesterday evening – and more than I
thought when I looked out early this morning. About 8 cm on the
ground now, and because the temperature has been below freezing this
afternoon it has not fallen from the trees – a beautiful classic
wintry landscape.

Hard frost developing this evening: already -5°C at Uccle and -8°C at
Brussels Airport at 22.30 local time. Forecast is for -10°C tonight
and a maximum of -4°C tomorrow.
