Heavy snowfall in Marseille and Provence
Public life was almost at a standstill on Wednesday in Marseille and
surrounding areas of Provence in SE France after more than 20 cm snow fell. At one time around 12 000 households were without electricity in the Bouches-du-Rhone department. Access roads to all motorways in the Bouches-du-Rhone were closed and on Wednesday evening between 400 and 600 vehicles were still stranded on motorways. No trains could leave Marseille station and the airport was closed at 09.30 on Wednesday morning. It will remain shut until Thursday morning while up to 40 cm snow is removed from the runways. Public transport came to a stop in the city during the morning except for the metro.
