My virtually antique temperature reader with wire probe leading to the
ouside, (takes 2x AA's) that I have mounted on the wall of my living room,
has certainly seen nearly the best part of 30years. I bought it from the
sales shop at the London Weather Centre in the glory days of Jack Scott i
think when you could see the duty forecaster read out the weather at 5.55pm
from High Holborn. Anyone Remember that!
So i'm looking for something similar (these days we have radio control units
mounted outside) I don't want anything really sophisticated like everything
wind speed et al I noticed this -- anyone have any comments to make?

I've found most of the radio sensor ones to be pretty good and very cheap
now. If you only want temp and humidity Maplin's usually have one and the
Lidl's (Silvercrest) one is top notch when it's in.

Just as a matter of interest, can someone explain to me how these humidity
sensors work? My LaCrosse one packed up some time ago, and I took it to
bits, but apart from the wireless gubbins there didn't seem to be much going
on inside.

I don't know about that, but I've found them often to be inaccurate,
especially during high humidity situations.

Googling about they appear to be capacitive, the capacitance of the device
varies with humidty in a known manner. Build an oscilator with the humidty
sensitive device in the control loop and the frequency of the oscilator
will vary in relation to the humidty. Then simply measure the frequency of
your oscilator to get the humidty reading.
