I know all you in the south are probably too excited by the prospect of
a few flakes to care about the hardier north, but duty compels me to report January 2009 from my station. January 2009 in Lundie, Angus, in the Sidlaws, 10 miles NW of Dundee, elev. 185m. January was easily the coldest month in my records. It easily beat my previous record (which just happened to be December 2008), and was about the same locally as December 1995. You have to go back to January 1991 to find a significantly colder month. Unlike December, there was very little snow. It was slightly drier than average and quite sunny - that is, when the sun peeps above the horizon of this grim and blasted landscape. Average maxima = 4.8 Average minima = -0.7 Mean = 2.1 (-1.6) Highest maximum = 10.5 (11th) Lowest maximum = 1.4 (3rd) Lowest minimum = -5.1 (1st) Total rainfall = 57.8 mm (84%, with 8.8 mm on 21st) All readings (except grass minimum) from a slightly less new shiny Davis Vantage Pro 2 (but the little plastic grid that covers the rain gauge disappeared within a fortnight). I do worry about the rain gauge under-recording but whenever I check it seems fine. More details on: http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~taharley/ Trevor |
