Frustratingly, the message I sent at 0951 has not appeared on my screen, so
this is a second attempt! Depth of snow in the garden is 31cm which is more than I measured in Feb 1991 or Jan 1982. I am fairly confident that the is the greatest snowdepth here since Jan 1963. Peter Clarke Ewell, Epsom 55m |

Peter - how did yo get on Jan 87? Cheers Richard I measured 23cm on 14 Jan 1987, Richard.. Since writing the above I have been in contact with a COL member who lives on Epsom Downs at 115m. His snowdepth this morning was 39cm and in 1987 his snowcover was 30cm. This seems to confirm that , in this part of England, it looks as though it has been the heaviest snowfall since the last days of December 1962. It is now snowing quite heavily again; I must remeasure the snowdepth later this afternoon. Peter Clarke Ewell, Epsom 55m |

It's pretty stunning to hear someone quoting "Deepest snow since 1962/3". Also - over how many days did that snow accumulate? Makes me wonder about a record daily accumulation of snow. Richard |

Richard I was in North Kent and most of it came Saturday night and Sunday morning. I had trouble working out which car was mine out of all the colourless white humps. |

Richard The snow in 1962 started here in the afternoon of Boxing Day and continued through the night and all the next day ( the 27th), when it gradually died out. I estimate that it was about a foot deep ( confession: I don't remember measuring it!) Then, 2 days later( Saturday 29th) a blizzard started in the evening and lasted most of the night. I estimate that about another 6 inches accumulated. All roads in this area were impassable the next day, especially as there was freezing rain for a time in the morning. I distinctly remember, on the 29th, disbelieving we would get another heavy fall because we had already had more than I had ever seen before! But we did get more so I was suitably astounded. After that, although there were frequent falls in January and February, none compared with the falls at the end of |December. Peter Clarke |

Richard Rushden (Northants) had 24" of snow in 4 hours on 4th March 1970. I think that beats anything we've got or will get today. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks., UK. Richard Well judging by your results the 25cm - 27cm [10-11 inches] I have had in Knaphill [NW Surrey, 3 miles West Woking] will probably be the greatest snow depth here since the winter of 1963. Amazing! |

On 14 Jan 87 I recorded 39 cm, which is my highest (starting 1983). There was some evidence from the radar last night that I was nearer the southern edge of the heavy stuff than Peter Clarke which may explain why I have had no more than him despite the greater altitude.
