Default Today's model interpretation (20/02/09)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon on Tuesday.
Issued 0518, 20th February 2009

High pressure will be over or to the south of the UK for the middle of the
week, with generally mild and quiet conditions for England and Wales.
Further north there's likely to be some rain, driven in by moderate
westerlies or WSW'lies. Longer term a spell of southerlies is likely before
rain moves in from the west.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS
A ridge covers Ireland, leading to NW'lies over England and Wales with
SW'lies elsewhere. High pressure builds to the SW on Saturday, with WNW'lies
and westerlies over the UK. On Sunday the high builds further; westerlies
are the result. The winds become WNW'lies on Monday as a ridge builds to the
west.

The jetstream chart shows a weak ridge over the UK, with the bulk of the
jet's energy far to the south. At the 500hPa level there's a high to the
south, as is the case with MetO. ECM has a ridge to the south instead, while
GEM brings upper SSW'lies with a ridge to the SSE.
At the surface, GFS has SW'lies for Scotland and light winds elsewhere due
to a high over SE England. MetO has a high to the east, with light
easterlies for southern parts of the UK and SSW'lies elsewhere. ECM brings
NW'lies with a high to the SW, while GEM has SW'lies for all.

Evolution to T+168
On day 6 ECM shows WSW'lies with a deep low over Iceland and a weak trough
over the UK. SW'lies affect the UK on day 7 as another trough approaches
from the west.
GFS brings westerlies to Scotland and Northern Ireland on day 6 due to a
tough. Winds are light over England and Wales. On day 7 high pressure
declines SE'wards, allowing WSW'lies to affect the UK.

Looking further afield
ECM brings southerlies on day 8 with a trough to the west. Southerlies
persist on day 9 and on day 10 the trough crosses the UK, with WSW'lies
following behind.
Day 8 with GFS has WSW'lies for all with a high to the SE. The winds become
southerlies on day 9 as a trough approaches from the west and on day 10 a
col covers most of the UK.

Ensemble analysis

The ensembles show a mild outlook.
