Default Spiral contrail shadow

There's a very distinct spiral contrail shadow on the low cloud over the North
Sea off the NE coast of England. See it at

Google Earth photographing underwater street plans? Alton Towers' new
ride? Or will we all have to be shot?

It's a sea-bedspring.

Almost certainly air to air refuelling. I've seen similar contrails over
us in the past:

Saw an Airborne Early Warning and Control plane going into Newcastle on
Tuesday morning.

Possibly or as I said air to air refueling. IIRC that area is one of the
ones designated for that. There is an excersice in progress though that
does cover that area and I did seen an AWACS on Tuesday looking as if it
was about to land at Newcastle.

I had an Air Force friend Chas Morgan (sadly he died three years ago)
who was a navigator before later becoming an airline pilot.

Chas told me (and the story was repeated by someone else at his
funeral) how when as a young navigator on Javelins (doubtless flying
with an equally young pilot), he plotted the headings, speeds etc to
produce a rather graphic contrail. I leave it to your imagination,
but it involved two circles, a couple of straight lines and a semi-
circle. Apparently the contrail "art" was clearly visible from the
ground.

Hi, Norman,

It's an AWACS plane, not an unusual site from here.
