Graham Penzance There are a number of news stories appearing now. A regular statement is that parts of west Cornwall received 50% of the normal April rainfall in 12 hours. In fact locally it was 100% in nearer 6 hours. There has been extensive flooding. 2 hotels in St Ives had to be evacuated. It now appears that the new flood defense scheme didn't help much http://www.stivescornwallblog.co.uk/...n-st-ives.html Graham Penzance |

Regarding radar totals: from the 1km radar suggests (24 hour totals midday
Fri - midday Sat, GMT) up to 239mm just offshore of the NW of The Carracks (west of St Ives) with probably 180mm along the coast - I'll delve into the details later.... Just 4-5 years ago Cheltenham had millions spent on new flood defences, yet look what happened in 2007. ISTM that Mother Nature just looks on improved flood defences as a challenge... ![]() -- Paul Hyett, Cheltenham (change 'invalid83261' to 'blueyonder' to email me) |

Looking at the radar rainfall totals (Friday 12Z to Saturday 12Z) in a bit
more detail: The area west of St Ives had typically ~170mm with a maximum of 193mm ~4km SW of the town. Zennor had 136mm. However, very sharp E-W gradient with much lower totals to the East of St Ives - typically no more the 25mm. Similarly with Penzence - the centre of which the radar suggests had ~25mm, but a few km to the west in the 80-100mm range. The highest totals were just offshore to the NW of the coastline with up to 200mm - however, maybe brightband played a part here - this region is ~37km from the Predannack and assuming a maximum height of the freezing level to be ~2km puts it at the 3 degree beam elevation...
