Are you confident of the accuracy of your thermometer, the quality of the screen, and that the screen is not in an exceptionally sheltered location? -- John Hall "Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now." Are you confident of the accuracy of your thermometer, the quality of the screen, and that the screen is not in an exceptionally sheltered location? In the latter case, a bit like Solent MRSC in fact ![]() Seriously though, it's been fabulous weather down here and we could be on for a double if the 3pm BST temperatures are anything to go by (Met Office site): Solent 26.3*°C E* 9*mph Hurn 26.1*°C E* 10*mph Strathallan 25.9*°C ESE* 5*mph Castlederg 25.4*°C ESE* 8*mph Glasgow Bish 25.3*°C WNW* 6*mph Carlisle 25.2*°C *N/A Northolt 25.1*°C NE* 16*mph Edinburgh Gog 25.0*°C NE* 2*mph Hawarden 24.9*°C E* 5*mph Keswick 24.9*°C NW* 2*mph Ballykelly 24.8*°C SE* 6*mph Heathrow 24.8*°C NE* 10*mph Thorney Island 24.8*°C E* 10*mph My own readings (screen is shaded by a North Wall) are running about 1 deg C behind Solent MRSC, closer than usual as there's a reasonable breeze. Max so far here is 25.8 deg C. -- Dave Fareham W. |

Seriously though, it's only 2-3 days a year that I record the highest - and Cheltenham does have a history of high temperatures in summer. Are you confident of the accuracy of your thermometer, the quality of the screen, and that the screen is not in an exceptionally sheltered location? No, not at all. ![]() I've explained the location & exposure in the past - a suburban garden, with the thermometer on a north-facing fence, sheltered at all times from direct sunlight. I've found this configuration actually records temperatures closer to those forecast than the sensors in my mini-screen record, though. In fact, while the official station was still running, I tended to record *lower* temperatures in hot weather than they did. -- Paul Hyett, Cheltenham (change 'invalid83261' to 'blueyonder' to email me) |
