Default Alpine Summer snow

I guess fairly unusual amount of snowfall over Zugspitze, in the
German Alps last night. I see from this mornings obs (10961) between
midnight at 0600 they picked up 35cm of fresh snow with a temperature
of around ms04. I can't find any stats of averages and extremes for
June. Anybody know?

They ski all year round in the summit corrie - not quite a glacier but
snow sticks there during the summer.

Zugspitze summit is shared with Austria - there used to be a border
post up there! When I was there the scientific station looked closed
so I'm guessing that obs are automatic with snow reports from the ski
centre. The rack and pinion railway from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the
lower summit station is mainly in dense forest and tunnel, so no
scenic train rides there! Better to take the cable car.

I hope there's some serious warming down there soon, as am planning to
go next month and would like to do some moderately-high level walking
below the snow line...

That low down that way does seem to be filling

A friend of mine has just returned from a week's mountain biking in
the Macugnaga area of Italy. Turns out that he skiied most of it -
from the glacier summits over 4,000m right down to about 2,000m!

Default Alpine Summer snow

Last year in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland it was snowing at
about 1800m in July lasted a few hours - apparently it is normal when
I asked some locals - it was very snowy at Kleine Scheidegg 2061m on
the railway between Interlaken/Wengen and Grindelwald. It was also in
cloud which was good as the tourists could not see the restaurant
Eigernordwand so it was quiet as we watched the cloud lift part way up
the face. Then the tourists could see it and we left ...
