Default [WR] Otter Valley, Devon - June 28th

After yesterday's cloudless skies, today has started overcast with just the
odd glimpse of the sun. The rainfall radar keeps hinting that it should be
raining but nothing is making to the ground. Only 14.6 mm of rain since the
6th of June and now everything is very dry.

The dryness of this year is in contrast to the previous few years. Rainfall
for this year to date has been 341 mm. Compare that figure (1st Jan - 27th
Jun) with 2007 = 549 mm and 2008 = 471 mm.

Sunshine for June has now passed 200 hours and brings the total for the year
so far to a rather healthy 915 hours.

(12:20), 20.8°C, RH 64%, DP 13.5°C, 1015 hPa (S), Wind 5 mph SE.

Similar story here, just 0.1mm overnight, and nothing measurable
since, despite some green/yellow echos over us around noon.

Light rain here in the last 30mins has left the ground wet.

.... light rain here too, just enough to wet the surface (temporarily -
evaporated now) from 1330-1350Z (2.30-2.50pm BST); thicker medium
level cloud, but now thinned/breaking. Still essentially a pleasant
day, though cloudy.

No measurable rain since the 0.1mm overnight, the cloud is very thin
now and it's sunny rather than bright. The last 'rain day' here was
6.3mm on 17th - the wettest day of June.

Still, at least the grass has almost stopped growing.

No rain fell here today which was a bit of a disappointment. Though the
upside is that the weeds on the allotment have stopped growing but the
downside is that I am having to water me veggies. Everything has gone mad in
just a week with the swedes, onions etc etc getting bigger by the day. And
the first tomatoes are coming, should be picking those in a few weeks which
is a bit earlier than normal.

Grass going more brown by the day. Has normality returned after the awful
summers of 2007 & 2008?

June to Sept are the driest months of the year here with the LTA average
(1973 - 2000) rainfall between 30 mm & 40 mm for these months. There appears
to have been a distinct 'drying out' of the summer months over the last 15
years or so which suggests that the average rainfall since the 90s is now
even less.

A calm, warm, bright evening with the odd sunny spell.
