Default Even the BBC has noticed something wrong at the Met Office

"You will need a brolly on holiday in the UK in August - the Met Office is
issuing a revised forecast for more unsettled weather well into the month.

It is a far cry from the "barbecue summer" it predicted back in April.

The news will raise questions about the Met Office's ability to make
reliable seasonal forecasts."

The Met Office offers a gratifyingly frank admission of dishonesty:

"It explains that it coined the phrase "barbecue summer" to help
journalists' headlines."

And the BBC mocks them. "The real problem for the Met Office is that this is
the third summer in a row where its forecast has failed. In 2007, the Met
Office chirped: "The summer is yet again likely to be warmer than normal.
There are no indications of a particularly wet summer.""

This is quite weasely (sp.?) stuff from the MO - if you stick out a
big headline it's because you expect something to be of note. This
summer hasn't been of note. I'm surprised there's so much wriggling
going on in the article and I feel they've fallen foul of effectively
dumbing down and creating a big glowing barbecue headline that people
will remember.

I sincerely hope that there is some form of panel / working party made
up of the media/marketing and scientists to attempt to scope out these
sort of messages. I notice that Philip you had your two-penneth and
dear old zany Piers gets in some marketing - makes a change to use the
BBC rather than the Daily Express, I guess...

Makes you wonder how they can credibly predict global warming in thirty

I was thinking the same.

I have now a fig tree and an olive tree in the garden ( their second
season) and, indeed, a vine doing very well in a sort of conservatory
( i.e. trimmed beyond two leaves after a bunch).

I believe there was a report, recently, about Mediterranean
conditions in the South so I appear to be ready and waiting.

So I am prepared for a 'better' summer in 2010 i.e. a sunnier and
drier July at least. I am sure there will be at least one more vaguely
hot spell - probably in September

Regards

Robin

I think this is the reason they do it. If they keep telling us how hot it
is, we'll keep on believing that it is.

One look at their website reveals that they're well into Warmist La La Land.
And now "global dimming" - here's the link:-
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climatec...xplained3.html

I don't know anything of the science of "global dimming", but I have an
inkling of what a measured, scientific stance should look like and the
contradictory hyberbole contained in the Met Office's CC webpages ain't it;

"The *most likely* cause of global dimming is the interaction with sunlight
of microscopic aerosol particles from human activities"

Why no more comment needed? Is yours the final word or something?

Yes, I did. But why is there no more comment needed, please? It's a
newsgroup. We discuss things.
