OK, July's not quite finished but a friend just emailed to ask "Is
this the windiest July on record? It's been real struggle cycling to
work recently".

Philip - does your E-W / N-S index (IIRC) take into consideration
strength of wind?

Doon 'ere in Devon it hasn't been as windy as July 08, but only just (so
far).

Here are a few figures.

2008 2009 (1st - 29th)
Max Gust: 35 34
Ave Max: 21 21
Ave Wind: 4.7 4.3
Wind Run: 3520 2833
Calm (days): 4.5 5.1

Figures in mph, and wind run is in miles.

Richard, no it doesn't ... the indices simply resolve the mean
monthly flow into its W/E and N/S components. My feeling
is that it certainly has been quite a windy July, but also that
most unsettled summer months are windy. The big difference
is that they are not as cool as they used to be. I seem to
remember reading that July 1954 was a particularly windy
month ... I'll see if I can dig out a few figures from the MWR.

How about the cold, dry July of the early 70s - 71? - as that had lower than
average pressure and a strong westerly anomaly
