Just when I thought it couldn't get much worse.....
Desperately poor afternoon for 'high summer' here.

Earlier it rose to 17c and rather cloudy, last couple of hours have been wet
and it's now fallen to 14c.
Wind F3-4 northerly, SLP 1018mb.

35th successive day without even 22c even being reached here.

What makes it all the more galling is that it's 27c and CAVOK at Manston. So
near but yet so far..

Why so cold incidentally? The temperatures in the far SW do not
suggest it's a particularly cold airmass west of the front. Can we
expect better for the weekend's ridge or are we stuck with yet another
bone-chillingly cool summer weekend?

Don't know why it's so cool.. T850s according to GFS analysis is around
9-10c around here.

Bournemouth reached 18C before the rain really got going so I would imagine
it's this that's cooled the boundary somewhat since; that and the reduced
insolation under the frontal layers.

The weekend looks ok, at least in the south, barring a few isolated showers
with temperatures around 20/21C.

The BBC forecast showed a warm front around here running north south.
We must have been on the wrong side of it :-(

Cheers, Alastair.

Maybe you'll break your sequence today Jim. How would 20C+ and
glorious sunshine this afternoon grab you? We all need it! Enjoy!

You've just been in an unlucky spot under the front.

Another sunny start here, though a bit more breeze than yesterday.
Reached 20.3C yesterday, but felt warmer as it was so still.

The far SW was notably cool last year, when the SST was rather low in
July/Aug. This year the SST in the SW approaches was normal most of
July, though rather below in the last week. It's currently a near
normal 17Cish at Sevenstones, but should rise now with quieter
conditions and more sunshine. Normal summer 'cold pool' near Isle of
White / East Devon.

The superb surf of the last 2 days is a thing of the past, looks much
smaller today, also a breeze will make it less clean. A day to get
back to some work.

Interesting is this cold pool which usually appears from mid-July onwards
and stretches from East Devon to the Isle of Wight.

As far as I can tell it stays way off-shore and maybe doesn't even affect
Lyme Bay where the temperatures have been around 17°C to 18°C, even during
the recent unsettled spell, whilst the 'cold' pool of water is currently
being shown as 16°C or so.

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsfaxsem.html

I would expect the difference to increase, off-shore SST in Lyme Bay
normally reach 21°C to 22°C during fine weather in August and early
September whilst the cold pool shown remains around 16°C to 17°C.

I recall reading a book about sailing and it mentions that between Start
Point and the Isle of Wight there is a slack zone of current caused from the
encroaching Atlantic current coming up against the current from the North
Sea. Maybe there is a slight upwelling of deeper water in that area?

Yes, the general opinion seems to be that this summer cold pool is due
to the meeting of the tides in the Isle of Wight area. I should
imagine that the water in the tide coming around from the North Sea
has different characteristics (salinity etc.) from that coming in from
the Atlantic, resulting in colder deeper water finding it's way to the
surface.

Did today's temp break the sequence Jim? I notice Hurn made 22C+ this
afternoon, though the airport may be slightly warmer than your back
garden! It was a beautiful day in Dawlish.
