Before we get into a slanging match about the inadequacies of our Northern
cousins ,could I make a plea for the summer weather to continue around Lyme
Regis during the first week of September ?.
Having decided to support our ailing economy by holidaying in England ,I
think the least the Dorset Tourist Board could do is to supply decent
weather !
By the way ,what is the attraction about 'the foot of our stairs '?,perhaps
its to view the remains of those despatched by the efforts of disgruntled
spouses who used to grease said stairs to precipitate the departure.of their
partners......

That's a rit northern saying Paul, are you from up north originally?

That must make me a Northerner then! Does Northants count?

Definitely a Yorkshire phrase, but I suppose some mealy mouthed softie
southerners could have wormed a phrase or two out of us to add to
their own, less colourful, local lingos. *))

You are probably going to regret asking the question, but I googled it
and came up with

"The foot of the stairs was en route to the lavatory, as was, in the
days of the outside privy, the less well-known alternatives, 'the back
of our house' and 'the bottom of our garden'. The implication of the
speaker's destination suggests that the real meaning was 'I was so
surprised that I soiled myself and need to visit the lavatory to clean
up'."

My wife works for the tourist industry in Dorset, but I can't get any
assurances from her because at present she in ib holiday in the South
of France!

As far as your other question is concerned, don't you just hate those
people who look up quiz questions on the internet? Well I just done
that, and you will be pleased to learn that nobody knows how it
originated :-) See http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/t...ur-stairs.html

I think I know, but I'll leave it to a Yorkshire man to reveal the
secret, if he sees fit.

Cheers, Alastair.

Actually when I saw the GFS, I somehow thought the August Bank holiday
wipe out had been programmed in no matter what. Put it in regardless and
its bound to be right.

All it needs is for Piers to 'validate' it with some doomsday scenario on
his site and ONLY THEN will I believe it!

No bank holiday here until the end of October...so I'll just sit back and
watch the potential horror unfold.. ;-)

Could that be the gfs trying to model the possible track of tropical
storm ANA? At the moment it is no more than a low pressure area, but
it is becoming more organised and the National Hurricane centre gives
it a better than evens chance of becoming the first Atlantic hurricane
of the year, within the next 48 hours.

If the gfs, or any other model, gets that one right for the UK at
almost 2 weeks distance I'll go to the foot of our stairs!

That was my point even at that distance the GFS was modelled to throw in a
wet bank holiday as if that was a safe default for August BH.

I am being light hearted by the way.

Good. I don't suppose that US programmers are too clued up concerning UK
bank holidays.

Time-frames are somewhat different but it's there's similarities! Very
active depressions close to or over British Isles. If this is a trend
developing I wouldn't welcome it despite the excitement of "weather"!
Looking very unsettled and windy. It feels like an early start to Autumn and
today, when the sun went in, I thought I felt a distinct coolness in the
air....
(That was probably the wife though 'cause I was on the razz last night and
hosted a BBQ but didn't do much of the tidying up!)

Another few runs and I'll be paying particular interest to the end of August
period.

I don't fancy my wife flying back to Southampton airport on Thursday
and meeting that:

Still waiting for a proper explanation of the expression "I'll go to
the foot of our stairs" from our Yorkshire Dawlish, but then I am a
great believer in the ninth beatitude.

Cheers, Alastair.

Well John I'm certain that when the American GFS was programmed that a lot
of UK data was used-as I'm certain Tobago and Syria didn't provide too much
let alone the other 4th world existence's

Sorry Alistair, it's a blind stag from me. I had to look up the
meaning, though my family used the phrase often! I like the apocryphal
tale of the disgruntled housewife taking revenge and I like this one:

http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/t...ur-stairs.html

....but I'm not sure either is right!
