August has been quite a respectable month for weather here. Apart from
the
dryness, it looks like being the warmest for 5 years ( the mean is more
than 1deg.c above the 1971-2000 average) and the summer's mean is very
close to ' normal'.

Does that include 2005 too incidentally? Shows what a difference 50
miles can make!

Yes, Nick. The mean temperature here *for August 2005 was 17.1c; this year
it's above 18c so far.
August 2005 was quite wet with70mm of rain.

And it looks as though the CET for August may end up higher than
any from 1956 to 1974 inclusive with the sole exception of 1959.

That does surprise me given the warmth seems to have been restricted
to East Anglia and the SE, with other areas getting only seemingly
"average" temperatures. I guess that says something rather
unflattering about 1956-74: I wonder if people born in the 40s and
early 50s, say, expect less of our summers than those born before or
after then?

Possibly. I was born in 1948, and having an interest in both cricket and
the weather can remember plenty of summers in the 1960s and early 1970s
far worse than this one has been - at least where I live in Surrey. It
seemed common back then for Tests to lose a day or more's play. Now it's
a rarity. Of course improvements in coverage and drainage have something
to do with that.

As soon as the Met Office recanted on their "barbecue summer" forecast
the weather seemed to pick up, but even July wasn't that terrible here
compared with what I remember from forty years or so ago.

I'd say that sums it up pretty well for me too (born 1942) and
living most of the time not far from where I am now. By 1954 I was
just about old enough to know what summer should be like and I
remember thinking at the time what a poor one this was. '56 and '58
weren't much better and there was no really good summer from 1960 to
1974, the last -mentioned being particularly dismal. In the last 20
years summers have been on average better than any period in my
lifetime. Some things were better in the past, but not summer
weather. People of my age (and sometimes considerably less) can get
quite huffy when you gently tell them this so it's advisable not to
make too much of it.

However, I well remember the glorious summers of 1955 and of course
1959, so my memories of childhood are of wonderful summer weather, in
both tjhose years, we went on holiday in the North West of England or
North Wales. Aaaaah those were the days... and I *only* remember
those two summers in any sort of detail, from my pre-teen childhood.
It's a funny old thing, memory!

Let's wait till the stats are out before judging. Few days to go yet, so no
rush.
According to my vegetables it has been the best summer for years, but that
is in part due to a half-decent colder winter killing off a lot of bugs and
pests.

S'funny, that's not my perception, not the missus', nor the dog
walkers down the road in Dawlish! (not exactly the most scientific of
samples I know!). The feeling is that it has been good at times, poor
at others. My missus thinks it has been quite a good summer overall.
Again, weather memory, including my own, over all sorts of timescales
is so unreliable. It'll be interesting to see the final figures and
where this summer sits compared to the averages.

Sorry Dawlish you can't dress Mutton up as Lamb, it's been a poor
summer here in Teignmouth.

I don't live in Teignmouth - or I'd be called Teignmouth! *))

Like Mr. Haytor says, let's wait until we can analyse the final
figures before making a judgement. My own weather memory and
especially how my memory of recent conditions, compares to the quality
of the weather in seasons past, is probably as unreliable as anyone
else's!

With Dawlish being only 3 miles up the coast, the weather stats for
Dawlish will be very similar to those of Teignmouth.

Ego - I was being Ironic. Let's await the stats!
