Similar to last week, but there has been a warming across most of the
equatorial Pacific during the last 7 days, but a continued cooling along the coastline of Peru. There are some oddities about this El Nino for sure. It's not a classic signature. NOAA puts the cooling in the Eastern areas down to an upwelling phase of a Kelvin wave. I'm sure some will read the end of this El Nino ENSO phase into the cooler Eastern Pacific. Most models still go for a strengthening of the El Nino conditions to eventually produce at least a moderate El Nino. "•El Niño is present across the equatorial Pacific Ocean. •Sea surface temperatures (SST) were at least 1.0ºC above-average across much of the central and east-central equatorial Pacific. •Based on current observations and dynamical model forecasts, El Niño is expected to strengthen and last through Northern Hemisphere winter 2009-10." http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/product...-fcsts-web.pdf |
