This afternoon I could see the Purbeck hills in Dorset, from
Lee-on-the Solent. That's 37 - 38 miles looking straight down the western Solent and is something i haven't often seen. Visibility "in excess of 38 miles" from old shipping forecasts comes to mind... and it was certainly that, today. Snapshot below, 300mm zoom, the two boats are Red Funnel ferries passing each other, 4.5 miles away with Purbeck to their left (likely Durlston which seems to be floating, to Nine Barrow Down) http://tinyurl.com/yj8p23e (Purbecks) Which reminded me, there was a gorgeous sunset yesterday - I had to drive like a maniac 2 miles to Warsash to catch it properly and sadly missed the best bit by a few minutes, when _all_ the clouds in shot were coloured red and pink. http://tinyurl.com/ylm8cx8 (Sunset) Otherwise, compared to yesterday, today was slightly disappointing, there was too much cloud around for my liking. Yesterday was like summer all over again. Dave Fareham West |

Good demonstration of the effect of habituation of temperature too: 17C can feel wintry in July yet positively summer like in October or April. Would be happy for the high pressure conditions to carry on as long as possible, at least until 25th October where I suppose we've got to admit summer's ended once and for all. Still not that long then till Feb and spring arguably begins down here... BTW I've seen the Purbecks from Bow Hill, above Chichester, before so I guess that's about the limit. Nick |

So that's about 55 miles line of sight, excellent. From where I was, down on the beach, there is nothing further to be seen; it's nice to be on the limit occasionally. ![]() -- Dave |

ISTR this coming up before and someone saying the hills were *just about* too low, but it was a narrow thing. Don't think it's that much more than 55 miles from Purbeck to Cherbourg, maybe 60 or 70?
